North Korea's Air Force: A Total Disaster

Pyongyang's Korean People's Army Air Force KPAAF is a decrepit cavalcade of clunkers.

The Korean People's Army Air Force (KPAAF) is the unified military aviation force of North Korea. It is the second-largest branch of the Korean People's Army (KPA), comprising over 100,000 members. The KPAAF's primary mission is to defend North Korea's airspace and provide close air support to the KPA's ground forces.

The KPAAF is equipped with a variety of aircraft, including fighter jets, bombers, and transport planes. However, the majority of the KPAAF's aircraft are outdated and in poor condition. Many of the KPAAF's fighter jets are MiG-29s, which were first introduced in the 1980s. The KPAAF also operates a number of Su-25 Frogfoot attack aircraft, which were first introduced in the 1970s.

The KPAAF has been plagued by a number of problems in recent years. In 2018, a KPAAF MiG-29 crashed into a residential area in Pyongyang, killing five people. In 2019, a KPAAF Su-25 crashed into a mountain in North Korea, killing both pilots. These crashes highlight the poor state of the KPAAF's aircraft and the lack of training of its pilots.

Despite its problems, the KPAAF remains a significant threat to South Korea and its allies. The KPAAF has a large number of aircraft and is capable of launching air strikes against targets in South Korea and Japan. The KPAAF also poses a threat to civilian air traffic in the region.
